Cases Loaded: A Boozy History of ‘Trav-L-Bars’ and On-the-Go Cocktail Culture

Inside the clipped-shut hard case exterior of my first Executair was a faux-velvet lining, four small metal cups, two metal shot glasses, bar tools, and storage capacity for three bottles. The kit was a package deal: Whenever I arrived at a party, I had my role and conversation starter ready-made. When I called it a night, I was bound for a hangover, as was anyone else who had one too many of my simple-syrup-rich concoctions. According to a long-saved eBay receipt, a “Vintage Ever-Wear Executair 707 Trav-L-Bar Travel Bar Set with Key Bottles and Accessories” arrived in my life in July 2012. It set me back $50 for the set, $13.17 for shipping. For the next few years, together with...

Naomi Ackie, who plays Houston in “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” turns in a fierce performance but is asked to lip-sync throughout to Houston biggest hits. The effect is, at best, an expensive karaoke session. The dilemma that Houston’s own prodigious gift put everyone in is understandable: The chances of finding someone who resembles the singer is hard enough; finding someone who also has the awe-inducing, fluttery vocal ability is a fool’s errand. But the solution would have been choosing between focusing on Houston’s story or making a documentary that features her singing. It’s...

The Correct Tee Height for a Driver: A Quick Fix for More Distance

If you watch golf on TV (or YouTube now thanks to LIV golf), you see guys hitting absolute bombs off the tee. It seems like everyone carries the golf ball at least 300 yards off the tee, if not more. Some drives are crazy long at 350+ yards!  Which motivates the everyday golfer to start speed training and swing faster, all in hopes to hit it longer off the tee. While speed plays a big role in maximizing your total distance, there’s another aspect to think about as well – the tee height for your driver.  Too many golfers just randomly put the peg in the ground and swing away. But if you truly want to increase total distance, hit more fairways, and...
